Occupational Therapist for 30+ years

  • Reflex Integration and Neurodevelopment Specialist
  • Expert and Consultant in all educational settings- Public, Private, and Homeschool
  • Mom of 3 adult children
  • Parenting Coach

My story begins when I was 16 years old and I discovered my passion in life. When a dear friend almost lost his life in a car accident, I found mine. It was clear that I wanted to be an Occupational Therapist through watching his journey.

Since then, it has been my life's work to support and help others with physical/social/cognitive difficulties, through the different phases of my life, I have never lost my zeal for helping others.

I love tennis, golf, lifting weights and knitting!

I also love learning and often read research articles in my free time. I'm kind of an OT nerd!

But my very favorite thing is to watch children grow from struggling spirits to carefree spirits and flourish in their God given abilities.

It brings me great joy!

"Gabriel has actually enjoyed the program. At first he gets frustrated, but once he gets it down, and sometimes it only takes him one session to do, he's excited that he can do it and finds it pretty easy and then it's been five days and he's able to be checked off and on to the next one. He loves the accomplishment of being able to check off completed exercises and levels and even completing his own chart that we print off for exercises.

I feel that as a family we have seen improvement. Just to do a little refreshing, one of the things Gabriel has is select mutism. Though never actual diagnosed, I believe that's what Suzi and my husband have said he has, and he is now at the point where he will make eye contact without pulling away and usually respond with nonverbal answers. Just recently though he said, "thank you," all on his own after receiving a balloon at the store, and raised his hand willingly when wanting to be chosen for a game with other peers. These moments have been pure joy for me, and I'm sure you can imagine. Though when asked before why he will not talk to peers or answer questions, he says, "why do I have to?"

We truly believe his mind is working differently and shifting to his actual age of 8, though I'm not entirely sure what that is supposed to be. He is understanding things more and applying more. He also has embraced this school year so far without the same triggers I guess is the best way to put it. For example, Gabriel would get very upset with cursive handwriting and corrections in spelling, and this year he is very calm and accepts the corrections majority of the time."

"Hello Kim! I just wanted to let you know that we started Gabriel 4 days ago with the week 1 step of rhythmic movements. I have instantly noticed differences in his calm behavior and he has even said that he, "feels weird," in a good way." 😯😄 -Melanie

"A few updates on behavior: I have noticed that Jacob is much more vocal these days. I mean, it almost seems like it happened overnight. He told me today that he was sorry for “being inconsiderate. It was used appropriately and was clear and I was shocked 😂 He has also been initiating conversations more. Just some things I have noticed. Thanks again!"❤️

"His speech has improved SO much! He was previously in speech but discharged, and I was afraid he was falling behind again. But since starting this program he is now speaking in functional sentences, asking questions, and even telling jokes at bedtime, which has been amazing to see!"

"So for an update on the week off, so far I have mostly just noticed a little of the throat clearing tick and sort of an eye twitching tick act up again, but it definitely highlighted how they have dramatically reduced since starting which is pretty amazing!! Other than that he has done pretty well."

Child is age 6 and is only 4 weeks into the program.

"Malakai is definitely progressing in his speech, and both his speech therapist and behavioral therapist have noticed the same improvement."

"Kate is making visible improvement in school in all subjects."

Everything has been going really well. Jacob is doing really well with the exercises.

Exercise & Reflex Progress

  • Rooting Reflex: Decreased reaction.
  • Palmar Reflex: Response reduced with consistent brush use; moving to a sewing needle to test if the reflex is fully integrated.
  • Babinski Reflex: Initial toe curling has subsided; he often tunes out during strokes.
  • Spinal Reflex: Still present with significant wiggling (including one fall), though showing gradual improvement.
  • Optodrum: Highly effective and enjoyable despite being tiring. Done twice daily at high speed at the end of the routine, helping him wind down for bed.

Behavioral & Developmental Gains

  • Language & Communication: Dramatic increase in speech; he now proactively initiates conversations with both known people and strangers (e.g., at a pool party).
  • Emotional & Cognitive Growth: Better focus, improved emotional regulation, and an overall significant shift in behavior.

"Good morning! I haven’t been able to post a video because we have been on summer vacation, but wanted to share some small wins with you!

In the elevator at the resort, Jacob saw a little girl and said “Good morning! What is your name?” she said what her name was and Jacob responded with “My name is Jacob”.

  1. While at the water park, he met a few young boys his age and played the boy version of patty cake 😂 and went down the slides with them.
  2. He’s also interacting (fighting) more 😂 with his step sisters. Advocating for himself as well - Telling them to stop laughing at him or to get out of his face or leave me alone (this is when he wants to read without interruption)
  3. I gave him instructions that after every water slide, he needs to come and check in with me so I can make sure he is okay. He has been doing this without any issues the entire trip!

This is just amazing to see! Just wanted to share! Have a blessed day!" -Natalie

Week 1 of Program

"He's already a completely different kid! Others have said the same thing and saw the immediate shift to being more regulated and more able to handle the usual sensory stressors! We are beginning the day with rhythmic movements, going straight into OT session one, then doing it again in the late afternoon. We saw Union Pacific’s Big Boy steam engine on display today... massive crowds. He handled it like a champ, followed directions the entire time. Only screamed once in the restroom when startled by the hand dryer, but quickly calmed, and has fallen asleep on the drive home. He dropped naps at age 3, so day sleep is not usually part of our day.”

Week 4 of Program

"We have loved working with Kim! She has been incredibly reassuring and kind, in addition to supporting me and my child with her expertise. My son (9 years old) has said that he has noticed a difference in his symptoms of ADHD, and he is more focused and attentive at school."

Completion of Program

"A thank you on behalf of our family! Your program is truly life-changing. Our boy is a different child than he was 9 months ago and we will be forever grateful to you!"

OUR APPROACH

Our program is based in the neurodevelopment and reflex integration sciences. Built on 30 years of Occupational Therapy experience in the clinic, school and home health settings. Addressing motor, sensory, cognitive, executive functioning and emotional regulation skills, this program is a compilation of Occupational Therapy tools, Harold Blombergs Rhythymic Movements and application of the The Melillo Method techniques. One that has gained a reputation for rapid results and comprehensive attention to the whole child.

At The Thriving Child, we focus on the parent being the agent of change in their child's life. We partner with families to develop healthy brain functions. With coaching, we partner with you, leading and customizing your program as you watch your child flourish right before your eyes.
