BALANCED BRAIN ~ THRIVING CHILD

Kim Lowack

Optokinetic Reflex Training

Optimal Eye Movement for Optosense/Optodrum

Use of OptoSense/Optodrum:

Lines going horizontal

  • Right brain weakness: watching the lines (animals for younger children to help them focus longer) going to the RIGHT for 1 min - 1x daily (simulates spinning to the right and is for right brain connectivity)
  • Left brain weakness: watching the lines/animals going to the LEFT for 1 min - 1 x daily (simulates spinning to the left and is for left brain connectivity)

Lines going vertical

  • All brain weaknesses
  • Watch the lines going UP for 1 min and then DOWN for 1 min (this addresses TLR reflex and the eyes and balance centers)

Undesired observations: Exercise is not complete until the below observations are gone

  • unable to maintain eye contact to object for the entire range of motion of the head.
  • dizziness or nausea
  • water or discomfort in the eyes
  • the eye does not track in the manner demonstrated in the video consistently for the entire 1 min

The Optokinetic Reflex is an important reflex for basic brainstem development. This should be present by 6 months of age and is used to coordinate and take notice of details of information within and out of range of head movement and stability of eye movement. This will help your child understand the nuances of information they would normally miss.

"Today the optokinetic reflex (OKR) is recognized as a basic mechanism to stabilize the image of the world on the retina during self-motion or in a moving environment. A stable image is a prerequisite for the visual analysis of fine detail in the world." Oxford Handbook of Eye
