This exercise is the beginning of the Symmetrical Tonic Neck Reflex (STNR)
Technique:
In quadruped (on all hands and knees) the child will lean out and over the hands while looking up to the ceiling without arching the back and then sit down and back on the feet while tucking the chin and keeping the arms perfectly straight - no bend in the elbows.
Frequency:
- 1-2 x daily - 25 repetitions
Undesired observations: Exercise is not complete until the below observations or gone:
- Unable to keep the back flat. It either dips or arches.
- Head movement is not synchronized with the body movements.
- Difficulty coordinating inhaling and exhaling with the movements.
- Arms do not remain straight throughout movements.
- Feet lift off the floor or toes curl
- A rest break is required
