BALANCED BRAIN ~ THRIVING CHILD

Kim Lowack

Thumb Ups - Anti Saccades

Technique: Sitting upright in a chair, eyes focused on the parent's nose in front of them. The parent randomly raises a thumb and the child is to look at the OPPOSITE thumb without hesitation. Then they should return their eye gaze back to the nose and wait for the next random stimulus of the thumb raising.

RIGHT BRAIN WEAKNESS: 90% of your thumb ups should be thumb raised on parents left hand (this forces the eyes to push away from the stimulus, thus strengthening the right side of the eye)

LEFT BRAIN WEAKNESS: 90% of your thumb ups should be thumb raised on parents right hand (this forces the eyes to push away from the stimulus, thus strengthening the left side of the eye)

Frequency:

  • 1-2x daily
  • 20 repetitions

Undesired observations: Exercise is not complete until the below observations or gone:

  • looking at the opposite hand of the thumb that is up
  • Incorrect eye response to a verbal cue
  • Delayed eye response to a verbal cue

We are working on anti saccadic (opposite) eye tracking along with the coordination of the Basal Ganglia/Cerebellum and Frontal cortex for impulse control, OCD, and Tourettes-type behaviors.  It is important to stick with this task until they can complete it without any errors.
