BALANCED BRAIN ~ THRIVING CHILD

Kim Lowack

Starfish

Starfish is a continuation of the Moro Reflex integration and should be completed as follows until you reach the completed video demonstration of the movement.

Technique: Either sitting in a chair or on the floor. Start with the arms overhead and the feet spread wide in an X position.  Crossing one side of the body over the other side when reaching a tucked position. R arm and R leg should both be on top and then switched to R arm and R leg should be on bottoms.

This activity can become frustrating for your child. You may have to start with the arms only until that is coordinated and then add the feet.

**TIP**  Use a sock or hair ribbon on the same side of the body ( around one wrist or on the hand and then on one ankle) this will give the child a visual cue as to which side should be on top and then the bottom.  When they have mastered this technique, then remove the items and complete this exercise with nothing on the wrist or ankles.

Frequency:

  • 1-2 x daily
  • 6 cycles (R and L are 1 cycle)

Undesired observations: Exercise is not complete until the below observations or gone:

  • Completing movement too fast
  • Not extending the head back slightly
  • Holding breath.
  • Arm movement is not synchronized with leg movement
  • Arms reach the endpoint either before or after the legs.
  • The head is not synchronized with the arms and legs
  • Unable to hold their breath for the required 5 seconds.

Modification with sock - (he should have his arms overhead- but this is good for the sock example and how to break it down-example)
